Alun Edwards from the University of Oxford trained German librarians and archivists in running public participation days to gather, digitize and contextualize everyday objects from the First World War. Alun gave a lecture about this at the Europeana Tech conference in October 2011. I find his project particularly exciting because it was operating on several levels - both as face to face interaction with the public, but also online 'crowdsourcing':
Part of the German initiative was to create video spots that would get both national media and the public interested in peripheral objects and memorabilia tied to larger processes. One of these is a wonderful little film made by Henryk Gajewski:
